Let us introduce… ROBERT BEAR and his STORY BOOKS

Facing the possibility of losing their home or actually losing it, or experiencing their families breaking up can be very confusing and upsetting for children, so we thought it would be helpful if we could give them a book with a story they could identify with, which would help them to make sense of their experiences but when we looked, we could not find one.
So we decided to publish a series of books and these are told through the eyes of a cuddly Bear called Robert.

By Robert experiencing the same circumstances that the children find themselves in it will help them to understand and deal with those situations better and give them some reassurance.

We are really fortunate to have a supporter who is a published children’s author, Jennifer Lowis, and a wonderful new supporter, Tom McLean, who is an illustrator. They have both given their services for free to produce a series of books for us.

The first three books deal with situations that many young children the Centre supports have to face on a daily basis namely debt, suddenly having to move house and a family relationship breakdown.

Knitters from all over are and have knitted Robert’s purple jumper. Aren’t people wonderful?
Buying a Robert Bear or book will go towards us being able to give a child a bear and/or book and also help us continue to improve the lives of children and families.

Children are very adaptable and accepting this also means they are very vulnerable to being hurt. Most children want to see and have a relationship with their non-resident parent and their family and this time in their lives can be very confusing and upsetting for children, so we thought it would be helpful if we could give them a book with a story they could identify with, which would help them to make sense of their experiences.

Last year the Roberts Centre accommodated over 400 children in our temporary accommodation in Portsmouth. In a year when there over 70,000 homeless children in England.

Losing their homes and moving into temporary accommodation can be very confusing and upsetting for children, so we thought it would be helpful if we could give them a book with a story they could identify with, which would help them to make sense of their experiences.

Robert bear makes someone happyRobert Bear makes someone happy

One in six UK adults or 8.2 million people are ‘over-indebted’ and struggle to keep on top of their borrowing. Parents were 50 per cent more likely to be in problem debt than those without children, with the figures rising for those with three or more children. One in five families with three or fewer children were vulnerable to problem debt while this increases to one in four for families with three or more children.

Robert Bear asks can dreams come trueRobert Bear asks can dreams come true?

Children and young people all have hopes and dreams. Our challenge is to support children to have experiences which at the very least, have a special place in their childhood memory box or, with a bit of luck, maybe even inspire them to follow a dream. So we thought it would be helpful if we could give them a book with a story they could identify with, which would help them to make sense of their experiences.

    Harry and Thomas

    Harry and Thomas

Everything changes for Harry Pritchett when young evacuees from London arrive at his village to be sheltered during the Second World War. Most of the children quickly find homes, but nobody wants Thomas, who seems weak, untidy and short-sighted. At school, too, Thomas is teased and finds it difficult to make friends, but Harry helps him out and sticks close by him through thick and thin. Soon they begin to share the most exciting adventures, from the crash-landing of a fighter plane to a visit from the police. But why has Harry’s best friend Emily begun to act so strangely?…
