The EYFS is a complete curriculum for children ages from birth to 5 years. It is a complete curriculum that has been set by the Department for Education & Skills (DFES).
The overarching aim of the EYFS is to help young children to achieve the five every child matters outcomes;
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoying and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Achieve economic well-being
The framework is made up of four themes. These themes express important principles underpinning effective practice in the care, development and learning of young children.
A UNIQUE CHILD
Principle - Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS
Principle - children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and /or a key person.
ENABLING ENVIRNMENTS
Principle - The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning.
LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Principle - children develop and learn at different rates and all areas of learning are equally important and inter-connected.
Observation
Your child will be observed every day by your key worker during activities and exploring play times. This allows your key worker to watch and record your child’s progress enabling them to select activities based around your child’s needs. The observations are then kept as part of your child’s learning journey.
Evaluation
Each activity that is planned for your child will also be evaluated at the end to see how well it met your child’s needs and to give an indication of additional activities that can be planned for your child as a ‘next step’. Your key worker revisits these evaluations during planning sessions.
Learning Journey
In the first week of your child attending nursery they will receive a learning journey. This book will then follow them through their time at nursery. This book is then going to be used as part of their journey through Nursery. In the book it will also have photos of their time at nursery and some creative activities that they have taken part in.
Your key worker will always be available to discuss your child’s development. You can request an allocated time to discuss your child’s progress with your key worker at any time.
